Ride Safe in Thailand

Essential safety tips and what every rider should know before hitting Thai roads.

Why Riding Safety Matters in Thailand

Thailand has one of the highest road fatality rates in the world — over 20,000 deaths per year, with 75% involving motorcycles. Whether you're renting a scooter in Phuket or touring the north on a big bike, understanding local conditions can save your life.

Essential Safety Rules

1. Always Wear a Helmet

It's the law — ฿500 fine enforced at checkpoints. More importantly, head injuries are the #1 cause of motorcycle fatalities. Wear a proper full-face or half-face helmet, not a novelty cap.

2. Carry a Valid License

You need an International Driving Permit (IDP) with motorcycle category or a Thai driving license. Without it, your insurance is void.

What license do you need?

3. Check Your Insurance

Basic rental insurance (พ.ร.บ.) only covers ฿80,000 for third-party medical — and nothing for you. Most tourists ride completely underinsured.

Understanding insurance types

4. Drive Defensively

  • Left-hand traffic — if you're from a right-hand drive country, take extra care
  • Expect the unexpected — wrong-way riders, sudden U-turns, animals on the road
  • Stay visible — wear bright clothing, use lights even during the day
  • Keep distance — Thai drivers often brake without warning

5. Avoid Night Riding

  • Poor street lighting outside major cities
  • Unmarked construction and potholes
  • Higher drunk-driving risk from other road users
  • Stray dogs are more active at night

6. Know the Roads

  • Mountain roads (north Thailand) — steep, winding, often wet
  • Phuket hills — steep gradients, sharp corners, heavy tourist traffic
  • Islands — unpaved roads, sand patches, no street lights
  • Bangkok — heavy traffic, aggressive driving, complex overpasses

What to Do After an Accident

  1. Check for injuries — call 1669 (emergency) or 191 (police)
  2. Don't move seriously injured people — wait for medical help
  3. Take photos — of vehicles, damage, road conditions, license plates
  4. Exchange information — names, phone numbers, insurance details
  5. File a police report — required for insurance claims
  6. Contact your insurance — as soon as possible
