International Driving Permit (IDP) for Thailand

The IDP is the easiest way to ride legally in Thailand. Here's what it is and why you need one.

What Is an IDP?

An International Driving Permit is a standardized translation of your home country driving license, recognized in 174 countries including Thailand.

It's not a separate license — it's a companion document that must be carried alongside your original license.

Do You Need One for Thailand?

Yes. Your home country license alone is not legally valid for driving in Thailand. You need either:

  • An IDP (with motorcycle category A), OR
  • A Thai driving license

Key Requirements

  • Must include motorcycle category (A) — a car-only IDP won't work for bikes
  • Must be valid (not expired) — IDPs typically last 1 year
  • Must be carried with your original home license
  • Must be the physical document — digital copies not accepted

What If You Don't Have a Motorcycle License at Home?

If your home country license doesn't include motorcycle endorsement, your IDP won't include motorcycle category either. In that case:

  1. Get a motorcycle license in your home country first, then get an IDP
  2. Or get a Thai motorcycle license directly → How to get a Thai license

Without an IDP

  • ฿1,000 fine at checkpoints
  • All insurance claims voided
  • Full personal liability for accidents
