What Is พ.ร.บ. Insurance?
พ.ร.บ. (Phor Ror Bor) stands for พระราชบัญญัติคุ้มครองผู้ประสบภัยจากรถ — the Protection for Motor Vehicle Accident Victims Act. It's mandatory for every registered vehicle in Thailand.
This is the absolute minimum insurance coverage. Every motorcycle, whether you own it or rent it, should have a valid พ.ร.บ. sticker.
What Does It Cover?
| Coverage | Amount |
|---|---|
| Medical expenses (third party) | Up to ฿80,000 |
| Death or permanent disability | Up to ฿300,000 |
| Temporary disability | Up to ฿200/day (max 20 days) |
| Your own injuries | Not covered |
| Property damage | Not covered |
Critical Limitations
- It only covers other people injured by your vehicle
- It does NOT cover your own medical expenses
- It does NOT cover property damage (other vehicles, buildings, etc.)
- The ฿80,000 medical limit is extremely low — a single night in a Thai hospital can cost more
How to Check If Your Bike Has พ.ร.บ.
Look for the พ.ร.บ. sticker on the motorcycle. It's usually on the frame near the handlebars. The sticker shows:
- Insurance company name
- Policy number
- Expiry date
If you're renting: Ask the rental shop to show you the valid พ.ร.บ. certificate. If they can't — don't rent from them.
Cost
พ.ร.บ. insurance is very cheap:
- Scooter/motorcycle: approximately ฿150–650 per year
- Included in annual vehicle registration
Why It's Not Enough
With only ฿80,000 in third-party medical coverage and zero coverage for yourself, พ.ร.บ. alone leaves you dangerously exposed. Consider:
- A broken leg can cost ฿200,000+ in hospital bills
- Hitting a car can result in ฿100,000+ in repair costs
- A serious accident can cost ฿1,000,000+
