What Is 3rd Party Voluntary Insurance?
Also known as ประกันภัยภาคสมัครใจ ชั้น 3 (Class 3 voluntary insurance), this extends your protection far beyond the basic government พ.ร.บ.
It's the most popular insurance choice for motorcycles in Thailand — affordable and highly recommended for every rider.
What Does It Cover?
| Coverage Type | Amount |
|---|---|
| Third-party bodily injury | Up to ฿10,000,000 |
| Property damage liability | Up to ฿2,500,000 |
| Personal accident (rider) | Up to ฿100,000 |
| Medical expenses (rider) | Up to ฿100,000 |
| Bail bond | Up to ฿200,000 |
| Your own bike damage | Not covered |
Key Benefits Over พ.ร.บ. Alone
- 125x more coverage for third-party injuries (฿10M vs ฿80K)
- Covers property damage — other vehicles, fences, buildings
- Covers YOU — personal accident and medical expenses for the rider
- Bail bond — if you're detained after an accident
How Much Does It Cost?
| Engine Size | Annual Premium |
|---|---|
| ≤125cc (scooter) | ฿1,300 – ฿2,500 |
| 125–400cc | ฿2,000 – ฿4,000 |
| 400cc+ (big bike) | ฿3,500 – ฿6,000 |
That's roughly ฿4–16 per day for up to ฿10,000,000 in coverage.
Short-term options: Daily rates available from ฿100/day for tourists and short-term riders.
Who Can Buy It?
Anyone can purchase 3rd party insurance, but for it to be valid in a claim, you must:
- Hold a valid motorcycle license (Thai license or IDP)
- Be riding a registered motorcycle with valid พ.ร.บ.
- Not be under the influence of alcohol or drugs
What It Doesn't Cover
- Damage to your own motorcycle — that requires comprehensive (Class 1) insurance
- Riding without a valid license — your claim will be rejected
- Racing or intentional damage
- Riding under the influence
